The objective for this project was to redesign a musical artist’s album in a chosen art style related to a notable graphic designer and art movement. The front, back, and vinyl’s center design had to be redesigned, while incorporating elements from the album's existing look. The selected musical artist was Twenty One Pilots and their album, Vessel. The graphic designer selected was Paula Scher, known for her postmodern work.
This project’s dependence on replicating the style of a notable graphic design artist was challenging. The final product had to reflect Scher’s postmodern style, while redesigning the important figures of the Vessel album. I wanted to avoid entirely changing the album’s existing design as well. The track list on the back of the album was a challenge as well, as I needed to find a middle ground between visually interesting elements and legibility.
By carefully analyzing Paula Scher’s famous work for The Public Theater, I was able to replicate her style for the Vessel album. Considering Scher’s work contains human figures surrounded by text, it was fitting for maintaining the original figures on the album. Instead of entirely changing the album’s existing design, I was able to edit the figures with Adobe Photoshop. Other photographs from Vessel’s promotional content were used for the back to further reflect the inspiration of Scher's designs. Text was added with Adobe InDesign and designed to replicate Scher’s Public Theater typography.
